Overview

Season 2 takes the show to Paris, and the change of scenery does it the world of good. Claire and Jamie arrive with a plan that sounds mad even by their standards: infiltrate Jacobite circles, charm their way through Versailles, and quietly sabotage the rebellion before it can end in the slaughter at Culloden that Claire knows is coming. It turns the season into something closer to a spy story, all coded dinners, court gossip and very expensive dresses. Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe are superb here, and Paris gives them new kinds of danger — the Comte St. Germain, the scheming of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and the return of the one man Jamie can't afford to meet. The middle of the season slows down, no question, and one storyline in particular is genuinely hard to watch, but stick around: once the action moves back to Scotland and the rising actually begins, the show becomes a proper war story about men marching toward a fate only Claire can see. If Season 1 was a romance with history around the edges, Season 2 flips it — this is history, with a love story fighting to survive inside it.
