Overview
Twenty years after a fungus turned people into monsters, a hardened smuggler is hired to deliver one girl across America. Her blood might be the cure. The outbreak began in 2003, when the Cordyceps fungus turned humans into aggressive creatures called the Infected. By 2023, Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) is a smuggler in the military-controlled Boston quarantine zone, still haunted by losing his teenage daughter Sarah in the initial chaos. The leader of the Fireflies, a resistance movement, hires him to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of the city. Ellie is immune to Cordyceps, and the Fireflies believe her blood holds the key to a cure. Joel is cold and closed off at first, seeing Ellie as cargo, but she slowly breaks through his walls. She is sarcastic, curious, and fiercely independent despite her own trauma. Along the way Joel is impaled, and Ellie must hunt for food and antibiotics to save him. The finale is a moral gut-punch: Joel kills the Firefly doctors to save Ellie, then lies to her about what happened.
