Overview
There's a fight in the second episode — one hallway, one unbroken shot, a man in a black mask too exhausted to stand by the end of it — that told you this wasn't a normal superhero show. Charlie Cox plays Matt Murdock, a Hell's Kitchen lawyer blinded as a boy by the accident that sharpened his other senses to a superhuman pitch. By day he defends clients alongside his partner Foggy Nelson and their investigator Karen Page. By night he goes out and puts criminals in hospital. The thirteen episodes build towards Wilson Fisk, and Vincent D'Onofrio plays him as something unexpected: a monster who genuinely believes he's saving his city, and who might be the most human villain Marvel has ever put on screen. Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson round out a cast with real chemistry. The series ran three seasons, fans never shut up about it (correctly), and Matt eventually returned inside the MCU proper. This first season is where to start: bruising, thoughtful, street-level television with a body count of broken bones.
