Overview

Season six begins somewhere you'd never expect: a psychiatric hospital, where House — detoxed, broken, and fresh out of hallucinations — has to convince Dr. Nolan he's ready to leave, and the two-hour premiere is some of the best television the show ever made. Hugh Laurie is extraordinary in it. Once he's out, House tries being a different man: cooking for Wilson, staying off Vicodin, working through his pain honestly. It doesn't entirely stick, because he's still House, but the effort makes him almost sympathetic. Back at Princeton-Plainsboro, the team fractures — Chase does something unforgivable involving a brutal dictator who's also a patient, and it poisons his marriage to Cameron from the inside. New faces rotate through, old ones drift back, and Wilson, played by Robert Sean Leonard, remains the only person fluent in House. The finale strands House at the scene of a crane collapse, helping a trapped woman while his own life quietly falls apart around him, and it's devastating. If you think medical procedurals are all the same, this season — darker, sadder, and more ambitious than the formula suggests — is the one that'll change your mind.
