House M.D. Season 5

House M.D. Season 5

2008 • TV Series
Overview

Amber is dead, Wilson blames House, and season 5 opens with their friendship in ruins — which for this show is like losing a limb. Wilson eventually returns to Princeton-Plainsboro, but things don't simply reset. House hires a private investigator, Lucas (Michael Weston), a dry-witted snoop who briefly becomes the friend House can actually stand. The diagnostic team faces Thirteen's Huntington's head-on as she spirals through risky behavior with her own countdown running, and Cuddy pursues motherhood through adoption. Kutner stays the team's warm heart — which is exactly why his sudden mid-season exit, still one of the most shocking in TV drama, hits as hard as it does. Underneath everything, House's leg pain and his Vicodin use are getting worse, and the show stops letting him be charming about it. By the finale he's hallucinating the dead, and the choice he makes in the last minutes reframes everything you thought this season was. Hugh Laurie is extraordinary throughout, playing a man whose mind is both his superpower and his disease. It's the show's darkest season — and maybe its best.
