Downton Abbey Season 3

Overview

The 1920s, after the war, and Downton is facing financial difficulties — but the season's heart is a wedding: Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew (Dan Stevens), finally together. Dramatic, emotional, and tragic, it gives the audience the happiness it waited for and then takes it away: the season ends with Matthew's shocking death in a car accident, and with Downton's future suddenly uncertain all over again. The season's tragedy is its timing: joy and loss, arriving in the same breath. The wedding the audience waited for arrives, and the season lets the happiness land fully — which is what makes what follows so devastating.
