Pennyworth Season 1

Overview

Forget the butler for a minute. This Alfred is young, broke-ish, and trying to build a security business in a London that's gone sideways, an alternate 1960s where fascists have grabbed power. Jack Bannon plays him dry, funny, and tougher than he looks, the kind of guy who'll crack a joke while things are falling apart. Then Thomas Wayne shows up, played by Ben Aldridge, and suddenly Alfred's in deeper than he planned, mixed up with spies and people who don't bluff. You don't need to know a thing about Batman, honestly. This works on its own as a stylish, violent, oddly funny period thriller about a man figuring out what kind of person he's going to be. And the look of it, all tailored suits and smoky rooms, is half the fun.
