Pennyworth Season 2
Overview
Civil war, but make it swinging London. Season two drops Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) into an England split in two: Lord Harwood's fascist Raven Union holds most of the country, London is a neutral zone crawling with spies and deserters, and Alfie is running a club in the middle of it while quietly plotting his escape to America. The fun of this show has always been the alternate-sixties remix — familiar Batman shapes wearing different faces. Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) is in deep with CIA games, Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) is fighting alongside the No Name League, and their stubborn romance keeps heating up in the middle of a war zone. Jason Flemyng's Harwood, rebuilt after season one's torture, is properly frightening this year. There's also Lucius Fox turning up with prototype gadgets, a pregnancy that raises the stakes for everyone, and a finale that leaves London changed. It's pulpy, stylish, and far better than a series about Batman's butler has any right to be.
