Overview

Adam's tower block in London is nearly empty, and so is his life — a lonely screenwriter going through the motions, until two doors open at once. One is literal: Harry, the mysterious young neighbor played by Paul Mescal, all charm and sadness, who talks his way into Adam's flat and then into his heart. The other door shouldn't exist. Visiting his childhood home, Adam finds his parents there — Claire Foy and Jamie Bell — exactly as they were before the car accident that killed them when he was twelve. They don't know they're dead. He just keeps coming back: a grown man getting to say all the things a twelve-year-old never could, getting to be a son again for a little while. Andrew Scott is quietly devastating in the lead, playing a man relearning how to be loved in the same breath, and the film holds its supernatural premise with complete gentleness — this is a ghost story where the ghosts are the kindest people in it. It's a romance, a coming-of-age story told decades late, and above all a meditation on grief: the kind that doesn't fade, just waits in an empty house for you to return. By the end, Adam is brought to the acceptance he's been circling his whole life — and the closing stretch, with Adam and Harry together in every sense, will leave you sitting in silence.
