The Handmaid's Tale Season 1 is the first season of Hulu's dystopian drama, based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood. The first season is set in the near future, in Gilead, a totalitarian, theocratic regime that has replaced the United States. The series follows Offred (Elisabeth Moss), a "Handmaid" — a woman who is forced to bear children for the ruling class. The first season is a dark, terrifying, and powerful exploration of the subjugation of women. The season ends with Offred being taken away by the Eyes, unsure of her fate.
