Overview

All-out war, at last. After two seasons of build-up, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) finally brings Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom together and takes the fight to Negan and the Saviors — and the show responds with its most action-heavy run ever: coordinated assaults, sieges, ambushes and more bullets than the previous seven seasons combined. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan, all grin and baseball bat, actually has to fight for his empire this time instead of just strutting through it. Between the set pieces, the season keeps cutting back to what the war is costing. Morgan (Lennie James) unravels toward the killer he swore he'd stopped being. Eugene picks survival over loyalty, again. Dwight plays double agent inside the Sanctuary, where one wrong look could finish him. And Carl, nearly grown now, keeps arguing that winning has to mean something more than the other side losing — a voice that turns out to be the season's conscience, and where his story goes changes Rick, and the show, permanently. It adapts the comic arc fans had waited years to see, and when the emotional punches land, they land like a truck.
