Overview

Rick Grimes wakes up in a hospital bed, and the world has ended without him. Andrew Lincoln plays a sheriff's deputy who comes out of a coma to find the place deserted and the world outside overrun by the dead — "walkers," in the language of the new world. Season one is built on that cold open of an idea: a decent, capable man applying the rules of the old world to a new one that punishes people for following them. Rick's mission is simple and human — find his family — and the season follows him out of the ruins and into the company of other survivors, strangers who have already learned lessons he is still catching up to. What makes these first episodes so gripping isn't just the walkers, though the show wastes no time showing you how fast a quiet street can turn. It's the dawning realization that the real danger isn't only the dead — it's fear, panic, and what ordinary people become when there's nothing left to stop them. Tense, terrifying and unexpectedly emotional, this first season is less about the end of the world than about the people still stubbornly living in it.
