The second season of HBO's anthology crime drama was a critical disappointment after the first — widely panned for its convoluted plot and lack of focus. But the season has its defenders, and its reputation as a fascinating failure has only grown: ambitious, flawed, and trying to recapture a magic that couldn't be repeated. A must-see only for the most hardcore fans — or for anyone interested in how a masterpiece casts a shadow. The season's ambition is real, even when its execution falters — and that gap is what makes it fascinating.
