The Revenant
Overview
Shot? No. Mauled. Hugh Glass, a guide on a fur-trapping trip in 1823 Dakota Territory, gets torn apart by a mother bear protecting her cubs. Leonardo DiCaprio plays him with almost no comfort and no glamour — just grit. His captain pays two men to stay with him till he dies. One is young Jim Bridger, decent enough. The other is John Fitzgerald, played by Tom Hardy, selfish and brutal. Fitzgerald kills Glass's son, dumps Glass in a shallow grave, and walks off. So Glass crawls. Raw meat. Stitched-up wounds. A night inside a dead horse. Freezing rivers. One brief kindness from a Pawnee man, proof that not everyone out there wants him dead. It's slow in places, it's hard to watch in others, and it's about grief as much as survival.
