Ted Lasso Season 1
Overview
An American football coach who knows nothing about soccer takes over a Premier League club. That's the joke, and for about two episodes it's the whole show — then Ted Lasso quietly becomes something else entirely. Jason Sudeikis plays Ted, hired by AFC Richmond's owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) as a secret revenge plot against her ex-husband: he's meant to fail, publicly. Instead he just refuses to be small about anything. Armed with homemade biscuits, folksy sayings and an almost stubborn belief in people, he starts thawing a cynical dressing room — Roy Kent, the ageing captain growling his way towards retirement; Jamie Tartt, the star who thinks he is the team; and Nate, the kit man nobody had ever actually looked at before. Sudeikis created the show with Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, and it landed in locked-down 2020 like a warm blanket, sweeping seven Emmys including Outstanding Comedy Series. It's kind without being soft, funny without being cruel. The radical idea underneath it all: decency isn't weakness, and believing in people might genuinely be a strategy.
