The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Season 3
Overview
Midge has made it — sort of. This year puts Rachel Brosnahan's fast-talking comic on the road as the opening act for soul singer Shy Baldwin, which means Vegas ballrooms, Miami beach clubs, USO shows, and a tour bus full of musicians who have absolutely seen acts like hers flame out before. The scale is bigger, the dresses are better, and the money problems are somehow worse, because the Maisel and Weissman families keep colliding with reality: Abe (Tony Shalhoub) has walked out on Columbia and discovers his principles are expensive, while Joel (Michael Zegen) pours everything he has into a tiny club in Chinatown. Alex Borstein's Susie, now managing two acts and drowning in both, gets some of the funniest and saddest scenes she's ever had. The season's real engine, though, is the gap between performing and belonging — Midge can kill in any room and still not be let into the one that counts. One set late in the season, at a very famous Harlem theatre, goes wrong in a way that reroutes everybody's plans. It's the show's most glamorous run of episodes, and quietly its most anxious.
