Masters of the Air
Overview
Daylight bombing sounded simple in the briefing room: fly straight, drop your bombs, come home. Masters of the Air shows you what that actually meant for the 100th Bomb Group — B-17 crews flying missions over Germany in full view of every gun on the ground, through walls of flak and swarms of enemy fighters, in freezing cold so brutal it could kill a man at altitude without a single bullet being fired. Austin Butler's Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven, Callum Turner's Major John 'Bucky' Egan and Anthony Boyle's Lieutenant Harry Crosby anchor a large ensemble of young airmen, and the series treats their courage the way its companion pieces Band of Brothers and The Pacific treated their soldiers: not as legend, but as endurance, mission after mission, with empty bunks waiting back at base. What sets this one apart is the combat itself — aerial warfare rendered with a scale and realism that puts you inside those shaking, freezing aircraft, where survival can feel like pure arithmetic. It's a limited series, complete in a single run, and it works as both a tribute and a reckoning: a generation of very young men sent into the most dangerous sky on earth, doing a job nobody could promise they'd come back from.
