The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Season 4
Overview
Midge Maisel starts this season exactly where the Apollo disaster left her: fired, famous for the wrong reasons, and far too proud to take the hint. Rachel Brosnahan's comic decides she will never open for anyone again — headliners only — which, in early-sixties New York, means taking a job emceeing at the Wolford, a burlesque club in a crumbling theatre, and rebuilding her act in front of sailors and drunks while telling her family absolutely nothing about it. It's a scrappier, sadder run of episodes than the tour-bus glamour of the year before, and the show is better for it. Susie (Alex Borstein), now running a real agency out of an office she can't afford, gambles on her clients and on Midge in roughly equal measure. Joel's club in Chinatown thrives in ways that attract exactly the wrong kind of attention. And hovering over everything is Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby), whose scenes with Midge carry a charge the show has been building since its very first season — he can see precisely where her road leads, because he's further down it. His Carnegie Hall set late in the season shows you the ceiling and the cliff edge at the same time.
