Overview
The season opens with Booth fresh out of brain surgery, having dreamed — during his coma — of a whole other life where he and Brennan were married nightclub owners, and he wakes up in the real world surer of his feelings than she's anywhere near ready for. That push-and-pull is the engine all year: Booth wants more, Brennan is terrified of what she'd lose, and the show's 100th episode flashes back to their very first case together to show exactly how they got this stuck. It's a genuinely lovely hour, and it changes the temperature of everything that follows. Around the central pair, the lab keeps turning: the Gravedigger case finally goes to trial, Angela and Hodgins find their way back to each other after a long detour, Sweets publishes his book about Booth and Brennan (he is, professionally speaking, a shipper), and the rotating interns settle into a family of their own. The cases stay inventive — a witch-trial reenactment, a mummified fortune teller, a documentary crew following the team around — but it's the finale people still talk about, with the whole team scattering in different directions for a year. Season five is Bones at its warmest and most confident.
