The Truman Show
Overview
What if your whole life — your wife, your best friend, your town — was a TV show, and you were the only one who didn't know? Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) lives a seemingly normal life in Seahaven, a perfect, idyllic town on an island: he works as an insurance agent, is married to Meryl (Laura Linney), and has a best friend, Marlon (Noah Emmerich). Cracks appear: a spotlight falls from the sky, labelled "Sirius"; his car radio picks up the frequency of the show's director; his "dead" father appears on the street, only to be dragged away. Truman survives, reaches the edge of the set, and finds a door. Christof speaks to him from the sky, telling him the real world is dangerous and he is safe in Seahaven. Truman smiles, bows, and walks through the door, as the show ends and the audience cheers — a prescient commentary on reality television, celebrity culture, and the nature of free will.
