The Grand Illusion
Overview
The Grand Illusion is a 1937 French war drama film directed by Jean Renoir, based on a story by Renoir and Charles Spaak. The film is set during World War I and follows a group of French prisoners of war who are held in a German prison camp and their attempts to escape. The film is considered one of the greatest films ever made, and it was the first foreign language film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film follows two French officers: Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), an aristocrat, and Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin), a working-class man. They are shot down and captured by the Germans. They are sent to a prison camp run by Captain von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim), a German aristocrat who is also a World War I ace. De Boeldieu and von Rauffenstein share a bond of class, even though they are on opposite sides of the war. The film explores the theme of the "grand illusion" of war — the idea that war is a noble, gentlemanly pursuit. The aristocrats, de Boeldieu and von Rauffenstein, still believe in this illusion. The working-class characters, Maréchal and the other prisoners, do not. The film follows the prisoners as they dig a tunnel to escape. De Boeldieu sacrifices himself to allow Maréchal and another prisoner, Rosenthal (Marcel Dalio), to escape. He is shot by von Rauffenstein, who mourns his death. Maréchal and Rosenthal escape to the German countryside, where they are sheltered by a German widow. They eventually cross the border into Switzerland. The Grand Illusion was banned in Germany and Italy for its anti-war message and its sympathetic portrayal of Jewish characters. The film was almost lost; the original negatives were destroyed in World War II, and the film was reconstructed from prints found around the world. The Grand Illusion is a powerful, humanistic film about the futility of war and the bonds that transcend nationality.
