Overview
In a country still raw from war, sometimes the most radical act is simply telling people what's happening elsewhere. Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels from town to town in post-Civil War Texas, reading newspapers aloud to paying crowds hungry for news of the wider world. His solitary routine gets upended when he discovers Johanna, a young girl raised by the Kiowa people who no longer remembers any other life, and agrees to return her to her surviving relatives. What follows is a quiet, moving journey across a harsh landscape, built on trust earned slowly between two lost souls. Tom Hanks is warm and weary as Kidd, and Helena Zengel is remarkable opposite him. Old-fashioned in the best way — a Western about kindness, belonging, and finding family when you least expect it.
