Overview

Nobody sets out to hurt the person they once loved most. That's what makes this one so hard to watch. Nicole, an actress, and Charlie, a theater director, are splitting up, and what starts as a civilized parting slowly turns into a painful unraveling of a whole shared life. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are so honest here it almost feels intrusive, capturing the tenderness that lingers even as lawyers and old resentments take over. Laura Dern is ruthless as one of those lawyers, in the best way. Noah Baumbach directs with real empathy, showing two good people failing each other in ways anyone who's loved and lost will recognize. Raw, funny in flashes, and deeply moving. Keep tissues nearby. You'll need them.
