Overview
Judas and the Black Messiah is a 2021 biographical drama film directed by Shaka King, based on the true story of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), the chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), the FBI informant who betrayed him. The film is set in Chicago in the late 1960s. O'Neal is a small-time criminal who is recruited by the FBI to infiltrate the Black Panther Party. He rises through the ranks and becomes Hampton's bodyguard. The film follows the cat-and-mouse game between Hampton and the FBI, and the tragic betrayal that led to Hampton's murder. The film is a powerful, urgent, and heartbreaking film about racism, government corruption, and the struggle for Black liberation. Daniel Kaluuya gives a powerful, Oscar-winning performance as Hampton. Lakeith Stanfield is also excellent as the conflicted, tragic O'Neal. Judas and the Black Messiah was a critical and commercial success, earning over $7 million on a $26 million budget. It won one Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Kaluuya. It was nominated for five other Oscars, including Best Picture. The film is a must-see for anyone interested in Black history and the struggle for civil rights.
