Parasite
Overview
Parasite is a 2019 South Korean dark comedy thriller directed by Bong Joon-ho, which made history by becoming the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film follows the impoverished Kim family — father Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho), mother Chung-sook (Jang Hye-jin), son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik), and daughter Ki-jung (Park So-dam) — who live in a cramped, semi-basement apartment in Seoul. They struggle to make ends meet by folding pizza boxes and taking odd jobs, barely able to afford Wi-Fi. Their luck changes when Ki-woo's friend, who is tutoring the daughter of the wealthy Park family, recommends Ki-woo for the job. Ki-woo uses his sister Ki-jung to forge a university diploma, and he successfully charms Mrs. Park (Cho Yeo-jeong) into hiring him. Then, one by one, the Kims infiltrate the Park household: Ki-jung becomes an art therapist for the Parks' young son, Ki-taek becomes the family driver, and Chung-sook replaces the long-time housekeeper. The Kims carefully conceal their relationships with each other, pretending to be unconnected strangers. Their plan seems perfect — the Parks are blissfully unaware, and the Kims enjoy the luxuries of the beautiful modernist home. However, everything changes one rainy night when the former housekeeper returns, desperate to get into the basement. The Kims discover a shocking secret: there is an underground bunker beneath the house where the former housekeeper's husband has been hiding for years, repaying a debt to the family. What follows is a violent, chaotic struggle between the two families of "parasites" both trying to feed off the wealthy Parks. The film masterfully blends dark comedy, social satire, thriller, and tragedy. Bong Joon-ho uses the physical spaces — the cramped semi-basement, the luxurious open-plan house, the claustrophobic bunker — as powerful metaphors for class division. The film's themes include economic inequality, the illusion of social mobility, and the desperate lengths people will go to for survival. The final scene, in which Ki-woo dreams of buying the house and freeing his father from the bunker, is heartbreaking because the audience knows it will likely never happen. Parasite earned over $258 million worldwide and won four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. It is a brilliant, layered, unforgettable film that works as both entertainment and sharp social commentary.
