Overview

Gone Girl is a 2014 psychological thriller directed by David Fincher, based on the best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn who also wrote the screenplay. The film takes place in North Carthage, Missouri, and follows Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck), a former journalist who now owns a bar with his twin sister Margo (Carrie Coon). On the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick's wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) goes missing under suspicious circumstances. Amy is the inspiration for her parents' popular "Amazing Amy" book series, and her disappearance quickly becomes a national media sensation. As the police investigate, they uncover evidence that seems to point toward Nick as the murderer: he had a large life insurance policy on Amy, he was having an affair with a young student (Emily Ratajkowski), and his behavior on camera seems cold and performative. The narrative is split between Nick's present-day investigation and Amy's diary entries from the past, which reveal a troubled marriage. But the film's brilliant twist, revealed at the halfway point, changes everything: Amy is not dead. She staged her own disappearance to frame Nick for murder, punishing him for his affair and for taking her for granted. Amy is a brilliant, manipulative sociopath who has faked her death before — she once fabricated a rape accusation against an ex-boyfriend. The film then follows Amy on the run, hiding from the media and the police, while Nick, realizing what has happened, hires a high-powered defense attorney and tries to fight back. The film's central question is: who is the real villain? Nick is selfish and unfaithful, but Amy is a monster. However, the film also asks the audience to consider what pressures and expectations drove Amy to become who she is — the pressure to be the "cool girl," the unrealistically perfect wife and woman. Rosamund Pike delivers a chilling, career-defining performance as Amy, oscillating between vulnerable victim and cold-blooded schemer. The film's climax is darkly ironic: Amy returns home, covered in blood from killing another man and framing it as self-defense, and Nick is trapped in a loveless, terrifying marriage for the rest of his life because leaving would destroy him. Gone Girl was a critical and commercial success, earning over $369 million worldwide. Rosamund Pike received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The film is a masterful exploration of marriage, media manipulation, and the stories we tell about ourselves and each other.
