Overview

Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) is a single father whose daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods. Three days later they return with no memory of what happened — and then they begin to show signs of demonic possession. David Gordon Green's film is a direct sequel to the 1973 film The Exorcist, ignoring the other sequels, and Victor's search for help leads him to Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), the mother of the possessed girl from the original film. It's an attempt to recapture the atmosphere and scares of the original, grounded in a father's panic: two girls came back from the woods, but something else may have come back with them.
