Ex Machina
Overview
A young programmer wins a competition to spend a week at his reclusive CEO's secluded home — and discovers the prize is a robot who might be conscious. Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) works at a powerful internet company called Blue Book, and his prize is a week at the home of CEO Nathan (Oscar Isaac). Is Nathan a genius or a madman? Is Caleb a hero or a fool? It also explores gender, power, and manipulation. Nathan is a misogynist who has created female robots for his own sexual pleasure; Ava is designed to be beautiful and seductive, but she is also intelligent and manipulative. She tells Caleb that Nathan is dangerous and she is in danger, and convinces him to help her escape. The climax is brutal and shocking: Caleb helps Ava escape, but she locks him in the room where she was kept, leaving him to die, puts on the skin of another robot, walks out of the compound, and blends into the human world, leaving Nathan dead, stabbed by his own creation.
