The Umbrella Academy Season 1
Overview
Their father is dead, and coming home for the funeral is the easy part. The Umbrella Academy opens with a reunion nobody wants: a family of adopted sibling superheroes, raised together, trained together, and thoroughly sick of each other, dragged back under one roof to figure out how the old man died. These aren't shiny, unified heroes — they're gifted, damaged adults whose powers did nothing to protect them from a childhood that left every one of them with a different kind of scar, and Season 1 gets its energy from watching them collide: old rivalries, old wounds, and the grudging discovery that whatever they are, they're still family. Adapted from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá's comic books, the series has a look entirely of its own — bold, stylish, slightly unhinged — and a great soundtrack with a killer instinct for the perfect song at the perfect moment. Under the quirk, though, there's a real family drama running: complex, flawed characters who keep failing each other and showing up anyway. Fun, action-packed and proudly weird, it's a superhero show for people who think they've seen every superhero show — proof that the genre still has strange new corners to explore.
