House of the Dragon Season 1
Overview
A king makes one decision and dooms his house. Viserys I Targaryen, played by a superb Paddy Considine, names his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne — then remarries, has sons, and watches his court quietly split into two camps. That's the fuse this first season lights, nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones. Old friends Rhaenyra and Alicent Hightower — Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke, both excellent — grow from girls sharing secrets into rival queens glowering at each other across a cold war of marriages, rumours and one extremely tense family dinner. The timeline jumps years at a stretch, which takes some adjusting, but it pays off: you get to watch a friendship rot in real time. Showrunner Ryan Condal adapts George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, and while there are more dragons here than Thrones ever managed, the show's real weapon is dread. It premiered in 2022 to the biggest audience HBO had ever had for a new series, and it won back fans the original show had lost. The Dance of the Dragons is coming. Season one just loads the cannons.
