Overview

By 1992 in this timeline, Mars is the prize — and for the first time, NASA isn't just racing the Soviets. It's racing a private company. Helios, run by Dev Ayesa (Edi Gathegi), a billionaire who genuinely seems to believe he's saving humanity, plans to beat both governments to the red planet, and it poaches half of NASA's best people to do it, Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) included. That puts Ed in the excruciating spot of competing against Danielle Poole (Krys Marshall), his oldest friend, who commands NASA's mission — two crews, one planet, and a landing both sides would rather risk lives over than lose. The season opens with a disaster aboard a rotating space hotel that plays like a disaster movie in miniature, and the pace barely lets up after that. Down on Earth, the secret Margo Madison has been carrying for years — the Soviets quietly milking her for information — starts closing around her throat, while Ellen Wilson reaches the White House still hiding who she really is. It's the show's biggest, pulpiest season, occasionally ridiculous and completely sincere about it. The race to Mars alone is worth the ride.
