Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is a famous, charming, cocky mystery novelist — and his new research project is shadowing NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). As a 'civilian consultant,' he turns every crime scene into a story problem, and Beckett turns every story problem back into police work. The season establishes the pair and their will-they-won't-they dynamic, with Castle's imagination colliding with Beckett's discipline case after case. It ends with the two of them solving the murder of a wealthy socialite — and with a partnership that clearly isn't ending there. Castle's imagination is his gift and his problem: every crime scene becomes a story, and Beckett's job is to drag the story back to the evidence.
