Overview
Yellowjackets is a 2021 psychological thriller drama television series created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson for Showtime. The series follows a group of teenage girls who survive a plane crash in the remote Ontario wilderness in 1996, and the lives of the survivors 25 years later. The series stars Melanie Lynskey as Shauna, a housewife who is haunted by her past and the secrets she has kept for decades; Tawny Cypress as Taissa, a state senator who is hiding a dark secret that could destroy her political career; Christina Ricci as Misty, a nurse who is a sociopath and whose obsessive loyalty to her friends masks a deeply disturbed psyche; and Juliette Lewis as Natalie, a drug addict who is trying to stay clean and find meaning in her life. The series also stars Sophie Nélisse as young Shauna, Jasmin Savoy Brown as young Taissa, Sammi Hanratty as young Misty, and Sophie Thatcher as young Natalie. The series explores themes of trauma, survival, and the darkness that lies within everyone when pushed to the absolute limit. The survivors of the crash resort to cannibalism to stay alive during the brutal winter, forced to make impossible choices about who lives and who dies. They also form a cult, worshiping a mysterious force they call the "Wilderness" that they believe guides their fate and demands sacrifice. The present-day survivors are still dealing with the trauma of their experience, each in their own way — Shauna through denial and domesticity, Taissa through political ambition, Misty through obsessive caregiving, and Natalie through substance abuse. They are haunted by the past, and they are being blackmailed by someone who knows their secrets and threatens to expose everything they have tried to bury. The series is a slow-burn, atmospheric, and often terrifying thriller that jumps between timelines, revealing the horrors of the wilderness and the horrors the survivors have carried into their adult lives. Yellowjackets has won numerous awards, including a Peabody Award for its innovative storytelling and its unflinching portrayal of trauma and female friendship. A third season is in production, which will continue to explore the aftermath of the rescue and the escalating blackmail plot that threatens to destroy the survivors' carefully constructed lives.
