Overview

New York in the 1880s is a city at war with itself — old money against new money. On one side, the old Dutch aristocracy, families who have lived in New York for generations; on the other, industrialists who made their fortunes in railroads, steel, and oil. Caught between them is Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), a young woman who comes to the city after her father's death and is taken in by her old-money aunts, Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon). Her neighbors, the Russell family, are everything her aunts distrust — and everything the future looks like. The season ends with the Russells finally accepted into society, and Marian still deciding where she belongs.
