Overview

Three witches whisper a prophecy, and a loyal lord starts to imagine a crown. Macbeth, played by Denzel Washington, is a celebrated Scottish warrior whose ambition curdles into murder once he hears he's destined to be king. With his wife Lady Macbeth, played by Frances McDormand, urging him on, he seizes the throne — then finds himself trapped by guilt, paranoia, and the very prophecy that promised him power. Shot in stark black and white, with fog, shadows, and empty halls doing much of the storytelling, this strips Shakespeare's tragedy down to something chilling and spare. Washington is commanding and haunted in equal measure. Powerful and atmospheric. A reminder of how quickly ambition can turn a hero into a tyrant.
