The Sixth Sense
Overview
The Sixth Sense is a 1999 supernatural horror thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The film stars Bruce Willis as Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist; Haley Joel Osment as Cole Sear, a troubled young boy who sees dead people; and Toni Collette as Lynn Sear, Cole's loving, worried mother. The film is set in Philadelphia. Malcolm is shot by a former patient, Vincent Grey (Donnie Wahlberg), who he failed to help. Months later, Malcolm is trying to help Cole, a boy who is having similar problems. Cole is a quiet, sad, and frightened boy. He tells Malcolm that he sees dead people, who walk around like regular people, but they only see what they want to see. Malcolm initially thinks that Cole is delusional, but he eventually realizes that Cole is telling the truth. The film is famous for its twist ending: Malcolm is dead. He was killed by Vincent Grey, and he has been a ghost the entire film. Cole has been seeing him, and he helps him resolve his unfinished business. The film ends with Malcolm saying goodbye to his wife, who he has been watching but unable to communicate with. The Sixth Sense was a massive critical and commercial success, earning over $672 million worldwide on a $40 million budget. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Haley Joel Osment, and Best Supporting Actress for Toni Collette.
