Overview

The Notebook is a 2004 romantic drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes, based on the 1996 novel by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as young lovers, and James Garner and Gena Rowlands as their older selves. The film is set in a nursing home in the present day, where an elderly man named Duke (Garner) reads a love story from a notebook to a woman (Rowlands) who has Alzheimer's disease and does not remember her own past. The story is set in 1940s South Carolina. Noah Calhoun (Gosling) is a poor, working-class young man who falls in love with Allie Hamilton (McAdams), a wealthy, privileged young woman. They have a passionate, intense summer romance, but Allie's parents disapprove of Noah. They separate when Allie's family moves away. Noah writes to Allie every day for a year, but her mother hides the letters. Allie waits for Noah to contact her, but she eventually gives up and becomes engaged to Lon Hammond (James Marsden), a wealthy, handsome, and kind young man. Noah, meanwhile, restores an old plantation house that he had promised to Allie. He is haunted by her memory. When Allie sees a photograph of the restored house in the newspaper, she travels to see him. They reunite, their passion rekindles, and she must choose between the safe, comfortable life with Lon and the unpredictable, passionate life with Noah. She chooses Noah. The film cuts back to the nursing home, where Duke is revealed to be Noah. Allie briefly remembers him, and they dance together, but then she forgets again. At the end of the film, Noah sneaks into Allie's room, and they lie together in bed. They die together, holding hands. The Notebook was a massive box office success, earning over $117 million worldwide on a $29 million budget. It became a cultural phenomenon, especially among young women, and it is widely considered one of the greatest romantic films of all time. The famous scene of Noah and Allie kissing in the rain has become iconic. The Notebook is a beautiful, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful film about the enduring power of love.
