The Batman
Overview
The Batman is a 2022 superhero film directed by Matt Reeves, starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. The film is a dark, gritty, noir-inspired detective story set in Gotham City in its second year of Batman's presence. Bruce Wayne (Pattinson) is a reclusive, depressed, and obsessive young man who has been operating as Batman for only two years. He is not yet the polished, confident hero of other adaptations — he is raw, angry, and still figuring out his methods. He narrates the film in a voice-over that reveals his philosophy: he is vengeance, the embodiment of fear for the criminals of Gotham. The film follows Batman as he investigates a series of murders committed by a serial killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano). The Riddler is a Zodiac-style killer who leaves cryptic clues in envelopes addressed to "The Batman." He targets Gotham's corrupt elite: first the mayor, then the police commissioner, then the district attorney. Each murder is designed to expose the deep corruption at the heart of Gotham. Batman teams up with Lieutenant James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), one of the few honest cops in the GCPD. He also encounters Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), a nightclub waitress and cat burglar who is searching for her missing friend. The film is a detective thriller first and an action film second. The action sequences are brutal and grounded, with Batman trading punches in a way that feels real and painful. The Batmobile chase is a highlight, with the muscle car roaring through flames. The film also introduces the Penguin (Colin Farrell), a mid-level gangster played under heavy prosthetics that make him unrecognizable. The film's climax is not a typical superhero showdown but a flood that threatens all of Gotham, and Batman becomes a rescuer rather than a warrior, carrying a woman out of the water and holding a flare to lead people to safety. The film ends with Batman realizing that he must become more than vengeance — he must become hope. Robert Pattinson delivers a brooding, intense performance, and Zoe Kravitz is a fierce, vulnerable Catwoman. The Batman was a critical and commercial success, earning over $770 million worldwide. It received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Visual Effects. The film is a masterpiece of atmosphere, tone, and character, reinventing Batman for a new generation.
