Overview

Forrest Gump is a 1994 comedy-drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on Winston Groom's 1986 novel. The film follows the life of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a kind-hearted, simple man from Greenbow, Alabama, with an IQ of 75, just below what was then considered the average range. Despite his intellectual limitations — or perhaps because of them — Forrest inadvertently finds himself present at many of the defining moments of 20th-century American history. The film is structured as Forrest sitting on a bus stop bench in Savannah, Georgia, telling his life story to various strangers who sit beside him. He tells of his childhood, growing up with his devoted mother Sally Field, who always told him that "life is like a box of chocolates — you never know what you're gonna get." He tells of his lifelong love for Jenny Curran (Robin Wright), a troubled girl who was abused by her father and who spends her life running away from Forrest and from herself. Forrest's incredible journey includes: becoming an All-American football player under Coach Bear Bryant, serving in the Vietnam War where he saves several members of his platoon including his friend Bubba (Mykelti Williamson), earning the Medal of Honor, meeting President John F. Kennedy, learning to play ping-pong and touring China as part of "ping-pong diplomacy," exposing the Watergate break-in, starting a shrimp boat business called Bubba Gump Shrimp, and running across the country multiple times for no particular reason. The film uses groundbreaking visual effects to insert Tom Hanks into historical footage alongside real figures like JFK, LBJ, and John Lennon. The soundtrack features iconic songs from every decade, and the screenplay is filled with quotable lines. Tom Hanks delivers a career-defining performance, making Forrest genuinely endearing rather than a caricature. The film explores themes of fate versus randomness, the nature of intelligence and wisdom, and the enduring power of love. Forrest is simple, but he is also kind, loyal, brave, and true — qualities that ultimately lead to a fulfilling life while the more "intelligent" characters around him are often unhappy. Forrest Gump was a massive box office success, earning over $677 million worldwide. It won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Tom Hanks, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film remains a beloved classic, though it has also been critiqued for its conservative politics and simplified view of complex historical events.
