The Sum of All Fears
Overview
The bomb goes off in Baltimore — and suddenly a young CIA analyst is the only thing standing between two superpowers and the end of the world. Ben Affleck plays Jack Ryan, thrust into the middle of a crisis when a nuclear device, built by a neo-Nazi faction bent on starting a war between the United States and Russia, detonates on American soil. Ryan can't shoot his way out of this one; he has to think and talk his way through it, using intelligence and diplomacy to stop panic and politics from tipping into full-scale nuclear war. Based on Tom Clancy's 1991 novel, Phil Alden Robinson's thriller plays the crisis straight — the strategy rooms, the misread signals, the terrifying possibility that one wrong move ends everything. Affleck takes over the role from Harrison Ford, and the film leans on brains over brawn to keep the tension wound tight.
