Overview
Speed is a 1994 action thriller film directed by Jan de Bont, starring Keanu Reeves as Jack Traven, a young LAPD SWAT officer, and Dennis Hopper as Howard Payne, a retired bomb squad officer who is holding a city bus hostage. Payne has rigged a bomb on the bus that will explode if the bus drops below 50 miles per hour. Jack must keep the bus moving while trying to rescue the passengers. The film is a tense, relentless thriller, set almost entirely on the bus. The film features a memorable performance by Sandra Bullock as Annie Porter, a passenger who takes the wheel after the driver is shot. Speed was a massive critical and commercial success, earning over $350 million worldwide. It won two Academy Awards for Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing. The film is widely considered one of the greatest action films of the 1990s.
