Society of the Snow
Overview
A Uruguayan rugby team's plane crashes in the Andes in 1972, the search is called off, and 29 survivors are left at 3,570 metres with no food, no shelter, and no hope of rescue. Stranded in freezing temperatures, listening to the radio, they learn no one is coming — and they are forced to eat the bodies of the dead. They are not heroes; they are ordinary men pushed to the absolute limit of human endurance, Catholic men struggling with the morality of cannibalism, believing their souls are damned but also believing God wants them to live. It is a meditation on survival, faith, and the human spirit, and a more harrowing depiction of the disaster than the 1993 story Alive. It ends with two survivors, Nando Parrado (Agustín Pardella) and Roberto Canessa (Matías Recalt), trekking across the mountains for 10 days to find help. They are rescued, and the other survivors are saved — a powerful, heartbreaking, ultimately hopeful story about the resilience of the human spirit.
