Overview

Silo is a 2023 dystopian science fiction television series created by Graham Yost for Apple TV+, based on the Wool series of novels by Hugh Howey. The series is set in a future where humanity lives in a giant, underground silo, 144 stories deep. The silo is a self-contained ecosystem, with its own farms, power plant, and judicial system. No one knows why the silo was built, or what happened to the outside world. The only view of the outside is through a large screen on the top floor, which shows a desolate, toxic wasteland. Anyone who asks to "go outside" is sent out to clean the sensors, and they die within minutes. The series follows Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), an engineer who works in the silo's mechanical department, the lowest, dirtiest part of the silo. She is a brilliant, resourceful, and stubborn woman. She is called to the top floor to investigate the death of a sheriff. She discovers that the sheriff was investigating a conspiracy: the silo's founders are hiding a terrible secret about the outside world. The series explores themes of truth, authority, and the power of knowledge. The silo is a metaphor for society, with its rigid hierarchies, its propaganda, and its fear of the unknown. The series is a slow-burn, atmospheric, and suspenseful thriller. Rebecca Ferguson delivers a powerful, physical performance as Juliette. The series was a critical and commercial success, earning over 10 Emmy nominations. A second season is in production. Silo is a brilliant and thought-provoking addition to the dystopian genre.
