Shogun Season 1
Overview
A shipwrecked Englishman washes up in Japan in 1600, and lands in the middle of a country quietly preparing to tear itself apart. John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) is the first Englishman ever to reach Japan, which makes him a prize, a threat and a barbarian all at once. He's taken prisoner by Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a powerful daimyo fighting for survival against his rivals on the Council of Regents - and Toranaga, who thinks several moves ahead of everyone, quickly realizes this foreigner and his knowledge could be a weapon. Caught between them is Lady Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a samurai's daughter and Catholic convert assigned as Blackthorne's translator. She's brilliant, dutiful and trapped - drawn to Blackthorne in ways her honor, her marriage and her faith all forbid. This is a slow burn, and it's proud of it. The intrigue unfolds through whispered conversations, ritual and patience rather than sword fights, and the production is staggering - the costumes, the sets, the sheer discipline of the world-building. At its heart it's a story about honor, duty and two cultures staring at each other across an impossible divide, each convinced the other is the savage. Prestige television doesn't get much more meticulous than this.
