Run All Night
Overview
Liam Neeson made a lot of these in the 2010s, and this one's better than most. He plays Jimmy Conlon, a washed-up Brooklyn hitman nicknamed "the Gravedigger," drinking his way through his sixties in the back rooms of other people's bars. His one remaining friend is Shawn Maguire, the mob boss he used to kill for, and Ed Harris plays him with the patience of a man who's known Jimmy since they were both kids. Then Jimmy's estranged son Mike — a limo driver and ex-boxer who wants absolutely nothing to do with him — witnesses Maguire's hothead son commit a murder, and within the hour Jimmy has to kill that son to save his own. Maguire gives his old friend a head start, then puts every gun in New York on the two of them. What follows is one long night: father and son, who haven't really spoken in years, running across the city with a clinical contract killer called Price on their trail and a patient detective (Vincent D'Onofrio) who's been waiting decades to finally arrest Jimmy. Jaume Collet-Serra keeps it lean and mean, and the Neeson-Harris scenes do the heavy emotional lifting.
