Overview

Pearl wants to be a movie star. That's all she's ever wanted — and it's the one thing the farm will never let her have. Mia Goth plays the young woman trapped on a Texas farm in 1918, dreaming of the screen while her domineering mother and invalid father keep her exactly where she is. Ti West's prequel to X is brightly lit in glorious Technicolor and deeply disturbing underneath it: an exploration of repression, ambition, and the nature of evil, as a dreamer slowly becomes something else. Goth is a tour de force, showing Pearl's vulnerability, rage, and insanity in the same breath, and the film ends with a stunning seven-minute monologue that you'll be thinking about long after it's over.
