Overview

Inside Out 2 is a 2024 animated coming-of-age film produced by Pixar Animation Studios, directed by Kelsey Mann. The film is a sequel to the 2015 film Inside Out, and it features the voices of Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear (replacing Bill Hader), and Liza Lapira as Disgust (replacing Mindy Kaling). The film is set a few years after the original. Riley is now 13 years old and entering puberty. Her emotions are thrown into chaos when new emotions arrive: Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos). Joy is still the leader of the emotions, but Anxiety quickly takes over. Anxiety wants to protect Riley from the dangers of the world, but she is also controlling and manipulative. She forces Riley to be perfect, to be popular, and to suppress her true feelings. Riley begins to have panic attacks. She quits the hockey team, she breaks up with her best friends, and she becomes a shell of herself. The film follows Joy and the other original emotions as they try to rescue Riley from Anxiety. They travel through Riley's mind, visiting new locations like the "Sar-chasm," the "Brainstorm," and the "Vault of Secrets." The film ends with Joy and Anxiety working together, realizing that Riley needs both happiness and anxiety to grow. Riley reconciles with her friends and rejoins the hockey team. Inside Out 2 was a massive critical and commercial success, earning over $1.6 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It was praised for its emotional depth, its humor, and its accurate depiction of teenage anxiety. The film is a beautiful and moving exploration of the complexities of growing up.
