Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Overview
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a 2023 superhero film directed by James Gunn, serving as the emotional conclusion to his trilogy about a band of misfit cosmic heroes. The film picks up after the events of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, with the team living on Knowhere, which they have rebuilt into a home. Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is still grieving the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), who died in Avengers: Infinity War, and the alternate-timeline Gamora who now exists does not remember him or their love. The film's central story focuses on Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), whose dark past finally catches up with him. The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), the brilliant but sociopathic scientist who created and tortured Rocket, has been tracking him. He attacks Knowhere and mortally wounds Rocket, who falls into a coma. The Guardians learn that Rocket's heart has a kill switch that only the High Evolutionary can deactivate, and they must travel across the galaxy to save their friend. Through flashbacks, the film reveals Rocket's tragic origin: he was a baby raccoon who was captured and experimented on, given intelligence and the ability to speak. He befriended other tortured animals — a walrus named Teefs, an otter named Lylla (voiced by Gunn's wife, Jennifer Holland) — and they dreamed of escaping to a world called the Keystone Quadrant. The High Evolutionary, furious that Rocket is smarter than him, tries to kill all his creations, and Rocket escapes alone, haunted by survivor's guilt. The film is hilarious, as Guardians films always are, but it is also the most emotionally devastating entry in the trilogy. The scenes of Rocket's past are heartbreaking, and the final sequence where he finally allows himself to grieve is one of the most moving moments in the MCU. The film ends with the team disbanding: Peter returns to Earth to reconnect with his grandfather, Gamora rejoins the Ravagers, Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Drax (Dave Bautista) stay on Knowhere to raise the children they rescued, and Rocket becomes the new captain of the Guardians, with a new team including Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo the dog, and Phyla. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a critical and commercial success, earning over $845 million worldwide. It is a beautiful, funny, and heartbreaking conclusion to James Gunn's trilogy, celebrating the idea that families are chosen, not born, and that everyone deserves a second chance.
