The Godfather Part II
Overview
Two stories, one family: a son in the late 1950s expanding an empire and losing his soul, and a father in early 20th-century New York building that empire from nothing. Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) tries to expand his crime family's business into Las Vegas and Cuba, opposed by rival gangster Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) and betrayed by his brother Fredo (John Cazale). Michael orders Fredo to be killed and becomes a cold, ruthless, isolated man. In parallel, young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) immigrates to America from Sicily, orphaned, and rises to power by killing the local Black Hand boss, Don Fanucci (Gastone Moschin), becoming the Godfather, a man of power and respect. It is a meditation on power, family, and the corrupting influence of ambition — dark, tragic, and epic, showing how a man who built a family to protect it can end up destroying the very thing he claimed to love.
