Echo
Overview
Echo is a 2024 superhero television series created by Marion Dayre for Disney+, the fifth series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Marvel Spotlight" banner. The series is a spin-off of the 2021 series Hawkeye, following Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf, Native American martial artist who has the ability to perfectly copy other people's movements. The series is set after the events of Hawkeye, where Maya shot her adoptive uncle, Wilson Fisk / Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio), and fled New York City. She returns to her hometown of Tamaha, Oklahoma, to reconnect with her Choctaw roots and to confront her past. The series is notable for its focus on Native American culture and its use of American Sign Language. The series is also the first Marvel series to be released under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner, which is designed to tell more grounded, character-driven stories that do not require knowledge of the wider MCU. The series features a memorable performance by Alaqua Cox, who is deaf and Native American in real life. The series was a critical success, praised for its action sequences, its representation, and its emotional depth. A second season has not been announced, but the series ends with Maya defeating Kingpin and choosing to stay in Tamaha.
